Field Work Reflection (11/17/2020)

    Today in fieldwork we had another mentor present for the first time this semester. This was a great learning experience because even though I have been watching Dr. McVerry present, it was good to see someone with the same amount of experience as me doing it. I was able to learn some important transitions and ideas on how to engage the students. Since I am going next week, it was refreshing to see that I am definitely prepared to do the lesson plan.    

    Once again, Dr. McVerry did a great job of engaging the students even though he was not presenting very much at all today. It is important (especially during camp) to be able to have natural flowing conversations with the students. A good way to make sure that this continues is to keep up to date with the current interest of your students. I personally think that this is an underrated and important part of being a fun and relatable educator. I believe the best educators are great at teaching and just as great at connecting with the students / sticking with the times. 

    Next week I am going to be helping the students get started on their Passion Projects. I will be showing them a slideshow which will teach them how to plan their project; the students can actually make a copy of the slide deck and use it for their planning. This will walk them through the important steps of the project and will provide them with guiding questions/tips.

Performance Task - Metaphors Matter

 " In many ways storytellers are alchemists. What is storytelling?" In order to be a great storyteller then you need to be able to take a story and make it interesting. This is similar to how the alchemist was trying to turn regular metal into gold; this was because gold was worth more. If you can take a story that may be boring but tell it in a way that creates excitement / more worth then you can be considered an alchemist. The art of storytelling is hard, two people can tell the same story but the way it is told can elicit certain emotions that make the story way more interesting. The storyteller also understands the type of emotions that the audience is "here" for. Do they want to laugh, cry, or question the scene?

Critical Literacy Write EDU 407

Why did we decide college and career ready is more important than civic and community ready? What does this mean? I believe that as a society we are more worried about people being "successful" in the real world rather than them becoming a good citizen within their own community. The common belief may be that if someone is ready for college and ready for a career then they will be forced to be good citizens in the community. However, we can see that this is not always the case for everyone and people often focus strictly on the education aspect of getting good grades rather than learning from experiences. In order to create a better community, we need to change our goal, Beck says   " Critical literacy has as its goal the development of responsible citizens, able to confront social inequities in their many forms and take action against injustices." (Beck) I think it is important to create people who will positively affect the community rather than focusing on grades...

Literacies and Worldviews WRITE Reaction to readings

 "Education Leadership" by Alfred Tatum took a very important point of view when discussing the "poor performance and achievement deficits of African American males" (Tatum). It is not always the fault of the person but sometimes it is the fault of the system. Within that system falls communities, teachers, administrators, and just overall structures. I believe it is very important to discuss the external factors that play a huge roll in every child's life; this includes but is not limited to socioeconomic status and role models. I believe that having the proper readings that a student in a certain position can relate to can be extremely effective. Taking their background and environment into consideration is a must; this plays a major role in most schools. Through the text we can engage the students in important discussions about the reality in which they live; they can start to question things rather than just accepting philosophies they have been taught.
