Why is having exposure to diverse picture books important for young children?
It is important to make sure that starting at a young age children begin to be exposed to diversity among humans. It is also important for ALL children to be able to see themselves within the books. For example, the white little boy or the black little girl should be able to relate to the books almost equally. This doesn't mean that every book should be based around one race but it means that it should be diverse throughout the year to make sure that everyone is comfortable and can relate to something. You also want the children's books to reflect the reality of the world that they live in; the world is a very diverse place and the children need to be exposed to that truth.
How can picture books help students learn English?
Picture books are an excellent way for English Learning students to learn new words and practice their vocabulary. Picture books allow for the correlation of words to other words that they are learning. For example, if they see someone "walking" "a dog" then they will also be able to see someone walking a dog. The teacher can also let the ELs look at the picture and describe what they see; this way they are telling the story themselves while also using their imagination. This also makes learning English for the students much more fun and engaging than just vocabulary sheets or flashcards. The students can also "see" the words that they are trying to learn and remember which allows them to make a correlation. Also, the importance of visualization for the students goes hand and hand.
What is your favorite picture book and why?
Curious George is probably one of my most favorite picture books because I always wanted to have a pet monkey when I was little. Also, I love the creativity and adventures that the book goes through since the monkey acts like a child. I remember reading this book a ton when I was little and I loved pretending to be curious george. Whenever it rained outside I would think of the yellow raincoats that they would put on. I think it is amazing how a picture book that I read when I was younger is still so vivid in my mind today.
