3 Things I learned.
- Disciplinary Literacies is believed to help the students in all aspects of their schooling. Teaching so that the student will be able to learn about all types of information. Whether it is education or not.
- Helping kids move across multiple domains will be the most effective way for these students in the future. "You are trying to give access to knowledge production and critique"
- Disciplinary reading versus disciplinary writing. Necessary Knowledge and Bridging Knowledge "is hard to define but it is the space between the knowledge the child brings to the table versus what they need to take away from the text. " Need the knowledge to get knowledge from the textbook.
- We need to think about the roots of the information that the students are learning, we need to build upon prior knowledge. Subject area text and disciplinary text need to be more closely related.
2 Things I am still wondering:
- What if the prior knowledge level is vastly different within your classroom?
- How do you properly identify each kid's prior knowledge or predict the challenges in a large classroom?
1 thing that interested me:
- I have never heard of disciplinary literacies so it was very interesting to learn about it and how it can be used within the classroom to help all students. I will definitely be watching more videos about it as it seems like it will be helpful to students of all ages including myself.
